Ah, toch nog een band die langer bestaat dan The Ex. Hoe lang? Nou, de nieuwe cd heet ‘1974’. Na dertig jaar weet de groep nog steeds te verrassen, al was het maar omdat toetsenman Robert-Jan Stips, jarenlang een belangrijk geluidsarchitect van de groep, weer op het oude nest teruggekeerd is. Nits begon op de kunstacademie, bloeide op in de new wave en wist vervolgens een bijzonder pan-Europees geluid te herscheppen, de keerzijde van de dominante Anglo-Amerikaanse rockcultuur. Alleen al dat is een verdienste, plus de verrekt schone liedjes die Henk Hofstede iedere keer weer tevoorschijn trekt.

Here is a band that has been around quite a long time. For how long then, you may ask. Well, their latest album is called ‘1974’. After thirty years, the band still manages to surprise us, if only because keyboardist Robert-Jan Stips, for years the main sound architect of the band, has returned to the nest. Nits were founded in art school, bloomed during the new wave, and ultimately created a unique pan-European sound – the opposite of the dominant Anglo-American rock culture. For that alone they deserve a medal. For the unbelievably beautiful songs Henk Hofstede manages to write time and again they deserve another.
