Finhop Met Live-Gevoel
Ha! De nieuwe Kaizers Orchestra – niet uit Noorwegen deze keer, maar uit het net zo noordelijk gelegen Finland. Helaas, zo erg is het niet, want de Don Johnson Big Band heeft maar vier leden aan boord. Ach, hogere rekenkunde in een wereld waarin de Drie Musketiers met zijn vieren zijn en het Yesterdays New Quintet maar één lid telt. Deze band is anders wel ‘big’ in zijn ambities. Ze zullen je niet eens zo boos aankijken als je hun muziek een kruising noemt tussen de duizelingwekkende, breed georiënteerde breakbeats van een Amon Tobin en de hoogst organische hiphop van The Roots. Ze voelen zich ook hoogst verwant met lui als Massive Attack, Blackalicious en Beck, dus tel uit je winst. Dat deed de groep zelf tenminste, toen bleek dat hun vaderland massaal plat ging voor hun platen. Live is de Don Johnson Big Band ook al een belevenis, en een groep die nummers heeft met titels als ‘Jah Jah Blow Job’ kan ook op EuroSonic niet mislukken.

Ha! The new Kaizers Orchestra – not from Norway this time, but from the equally northern Finland. But the Orchestra outnumbers the Big Band, for the Don Johnson Big Band consist only of four. Oh well, who needs higher mathematics in a world where there are four Three Musketeers and the Yesterdays New Quintet is just one bloke. The band is big indeed when it comes to ambition. They won’t feel insulted when you call their music a crossover between the dazzling, broadly oriented breakbeats of one Amon Tobin and the utterly organic hip hop of the Roots. They feel connected with Massive Attack, Blackalicious and Beck, big names indeed. As big as the success their records have in Finland. Seeing the Don Johnson Big Band live is a great experience, almost as great an experience as getting a ‘Jah Jah Blow Job’ - whatever that may be. Ask them, it’s the title of one of their songs.
