Ah! Meneer Sings! Maar nee, Benny Sings heet van zichzelf gewoon Tim van Berkestijn en leende zijn artiestennaam van het album ‘Chet Baker Sings’. Hij studeerde sonologie aan het Haagse Conservatorium, maar besloot dat hij zijn computer liever aanwendde voor het maken van lome, hiphop-achtige beats in plaats van voor het soort vage kunstmuziek waarvoor hij is opgeleid – al is hij zodoende wel gediplomeerd componist. Als popmuzikant haalde hij zijn diploma cum laude met ‘Champagne People’: een plaat vol warmbloedige soul, lui en vanzelfsprekend gezongen op zelfgemaakte beats vol verbeeldingskracht. Enkele muzikanten uit het kamp van jazzfunkgroep Sfeq, op wier Dox-label de plaat onder de mensen komt, verleenden hier en daar hand- en spandiensten, maar vooral niet te veel. Op de planken drijft hij een intiem, jazzy getint combo, maar de studio blijft zijn privé-domein.

Benny Sings’ real name is Tim van Berkestijn and this stage name was borrowed from the album ‘Chet Baker Sings’. After his study sonology at the conservatory in The Hague, he came to the conclusion he preferred to use his computer for creating slow, hip hop-ish beats, rather than for the vague art music he learned in school – even though this made him a qualified composer. As a pop musician he got his degree cum laude with ‘Champagne People’: a record full of warm-blooded soul, sung lazily and obviously to self-made beats full of imagination. A couple of musicians from clique around the jazz-funk band Sfeq – their Dox-label put out ‘Champagne People’ – lent the odd hand, but only here and there. On stage an intimate combo with a jazzy feel accompanies him, but in the studio the man likes to do things himself.TEKST EN
