Wat goed is komt snel. Bell X1 was de naam van het vliegtuig waarmee Chuck Yeager menig snelheidsrecord brak – lees het boek en bekijk de film, beide TheRight Stuff geheten. Denk niet dat de Ierse groep met die naam nu The Ramones voorbij wensen te streven, qua snelheid. Generatiegenoten Television, Talking Heads en Blondie, dat komt meer in de buurt, maar ook de welluidend jengelende gitaren van The Byrds en Steve Miller hebben sporen nagelaten. Zulke geluiden, op zich decennia oud, krijgen van Bell X1 een onvervalst hedendaagse vertaling, vol pittig vormgegeven weemoed en verlangen.

What’s good, comes fast. The original Bell X1 was the name of the plane with which Chuck Yeager broke numerous speed records – read the book and watch the film, both called ‘The Right Stuff’. Now don’t think the Irish band of that same name aim to equal The Ramones in speed. Their contemporaries Television, Talking Heads and Blondie are more in their field, but the melodic guitars of The Byrds and Steve Miller have also made an impact. Though decades old, in the hands of Bell X1 these sounds get a brand-new coat – full of melancholy and desire.
